Jobs
The scheme will provide a significant number of jobs, both during the construction phase and within the completed scheme. Hammerson plc is experienced in supporting Local Authorities and Government agencies in providing training for those seeking to work on its schemes, both during and after construction. The QLP has already established a dialogue with local education and skills providers. Following planning permission, the QLP would work with local providers to ensure that employees receive ongoing training, leaving them with transferable skills which are of long-term benefit. A community engagement strategy will be developed over the next twelve months.

Amenities
The mixed-use nature of these proposals ensures that Peterborough City Centre will be served by a variety of uses. These include high-quality retail outlets such as the new Marks & Spencer department store, as well as other aspirational retailers. These will form new shopping streets, allowing visitors to enjoy shopping in an open and vibrant mixed-use environment. The new public square, which will surround the renovated Westgate Church, will provide a focus for the restaurant quarter, giving Peterborough a family-friendly ‘food quarter’ which allows a safe and enjoyable eating experience. This will be enhanced by the provision of a multiplex cinema with direct access onto the public square. The scheme encourages an integrated approach to transport within the city centre via new and high quality car-parking; a new bus terminal with improved user information; and a focus on pedestrians and cyclists’ needs via improved permeability throughout the development. There will be secure cycle storage facilities provided within the carparks and the main development.

Regeneration
The QLP is investing over £450 million into Peterborough. Whilst the scheme will introduce new retail, leisure and residential elements, there are knock-on benefits which are equally important for Peterborough’s future. These are elements such as the new bus terminal on Bourges Boulevard, improved public realm, and improved traffic flow around the city centre thanks to modernised multi-storey car parks and more efficient traffic direction. The thirteen permanently subsidized ‘incubator units’ are specifically aimed at smaller local businesses, ensuring that the development is both socially and physically integrated, and reflects Peterborough’s varied local needs. It is an exciting period in the evolution of Peterborough’s future and a chance to work closely with Opportunity Peterborough, the City Centre Partnership, and other key stakeholders in shaping the city centre to maximise its growth potential.
